Greyhound Freedom UK has formed at a pivotal moment, bringing together organisations with a shared belief that public opinion, political momentum and international trends are converging to make an end to greyhound racing achievable.
For many years, concerns about greyhound racing have been raised by animal protection organisations, veterinarians, campaigners and members of the public. Yet despite mounting evidence of injuries, deaths and the routine exploitation of dogs for gambling and entertainment, meaningful change has remained out of reach.
Today, the landscape looks very different.
Public attitudes towards animals have shifted significantly over the past decade. People increasingly expect animals to be treated as individuals, not commodities. Activities once regarded as acceptable are now facing greater scrutiny, and there is growing discomfort with industries that profit from animal suffering. Greyhound racing is no exception.
Recent polling commissioned by Greyhound Freedom UK shows that public support for ending greyhound racing is now strong. The findings reflect a broader trend in public discourse, with increasing concern about the welfare consequences of breeding dogs to race, the injuries sustained on tracks, and the fate of greyhounds once their racing careers end.
At the same time, political momentum is building. MPs from across the political spectrum have spoken out against greyhound racing, parliamentary engagement is increasing, and legislative proposals are beginning to emerge. Most notably, Lisa Smart MP has introduced a Private Member's Bill aimed at ending the sport, signalling that the issue is moving beyond campaigning circles and into mainstream political debate.
Internationally, England is also becoming an outlier. Governments and jurisdictions around the world have recognised that greyhound racing no longer reflects public expectations of how animals should be treated. As other nations move away from the industry, pressure is growing for England to keep pace with changing standards and public values.
Against this backdrop, organisations working on different aspects of the issue recognised a clear opportunity: to unite behind a single objective and speak with one stronger voice.
Greyhound Freedom UK brings together expertise in animal protection, public mobilisation, political advocacy, gambling reform and strategic campaigning. By coordinating efforts, sharing resources and focusing on a common goal, the coalition can build the public and political pressure needed to achieve lasting change.
The coalition's launch is also significant because it comes during the centenary year of greyhound racing. While the industry may view 100 years of racing as a milestone worth celebrating, coalition members see it differently. A century after the first race, there is an opportunity to ask a simple question: if this industry were being proposed today, would the public accept it?
With attitudes changing, political support growing and evidence continuing to mount, Greyhound Freedom UK believes the answer is increasingly clear. The question is no longer whether greyhound racing's future will be debated, but whether England is ready to move with the times and bring this chapter to an end.
